No one has been cast as James Bond, and anyone telling you otherwise in September 2026 is guessing. What is confirmed is the team behind the film and the brief they are casting to — and that brief rules out most of the names currently circulating.
The Confirmed Team
Denis Villeneuve was announced as director on 25 June 2025, on a single-film deal. Steven Knight is writing the screenplay. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing for Amazon MGM, with Tanya Lapointe executive producing.
Casting formally began in May 2026, with Variety reporting that Nina Gold — whose credits include Game of Thrones — is the casting director. Amazon MGM has confirmed the process is underway while declining to comment on individual names, which is standard practice and also the reason the vacuum has filled with reporting of varying quality.
The one concrete production development is that Knight has completed a first draft of the script. That is a real milestone and a deeply unglamorous one, which is why it has generated a fraction of the attention that unfounded casting lists have.
The Brief Is Narrower Than the Speculation
Deadline’s reporting on the search criteria is the most useful thing published on this so far: a British male actor, described by sources as a fresh face, specifically in his late twenties or early thirties.
Read that carefully, because it does most of the work. “Fresh face” and “late twenties” together describe someone who is not currently a headline star — which is the opposite of nearly every name that trends on this subject. A Page Six report listed Jack Barton, Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal and Harris Dickinson as contenders. Several of those are established leading men, and some sit outside the stated age window entirely.
Matt Belloni has pushed back on the circulating lists directly, reporting that screen tests would not happen until later in the autumn — meaning nobody claiming to know the answer now is in a position to. He had reported on 3 September that test deals were going out to actors in contention, which is a genuine step forward in the process but is not the same as a decision. When Knight made comments five days later, they were widely read as a hint that the choice had been made. They were comments, not an announcement.
The pattern here is worth naming, because it will repeat for the next year. A franchise between installments generates enormous, sustained search demand attached to a single unresolved question. Publishers meet that demand with whatever material exists, and in the absence of an announcement the available material is clues, readings and clarifications of earlier readings. None of it moves the casting forward. All of it ranks.
When You Will Actually Know
Amy Pascal has said that casting news before the end of 2026 is, in her words, a good bet. Production is scheduled to start in 2027, and a release before 2028 is unlikely.
That timeline is normal for this franchise and it sets a reasonable expectation: an announcement is plausible within months, a film is years away. If you want a reliable signal, watch for Amazon MGM confirming a name directly rather than a report of a shortlist — the studio has been consistent about not commenting mid-process, so when it does comment, the process will be over.
