Fulham 1-1 Manchester United. Lisandro Martínez scored the own goal that put Fulham ahead at Craven Cottage on Sunday 20 September, and United needed a deflected Matheus Cunha shot in the 89th minute to leave west London with anything at all.
How the own goal happened
The goal came in the 63rd minute and nothing about it was clean. Calvin Bassey took the ball off Cunha and drove it at goal. Senne Lammens got a hand to the shot, but the parry dropped straight to Martínez, and his attempt to clear it went back past his own goalkeeper.
That is the sort of moment a defender carries around for a while. According to The Peoples Person, it was the Argentine’s third Premier League own goal for United, which would put him level with Jonny Evans, Henning Berg, Wes Brown and John O’Shea for the most in the club’s Premier League history. No centre-back wants his name on that list.
The equaliser, and the chances either side of it
United were not poor before the break. Bruno Fernandes struck the post in the first half, and Bernd Leno had to be alert in the Fulham goal more than once.
The equaliser had a small piece of justice in it. Cunha, who lost the ball in the build-up to the opener, fired in a shot a minute from the end of normal time, and a heavy deflection off David Affengruber took it past Leno.
A point does not rescue United’s week. TNT Sports noted they arrived at Craven Cottage straight from a Carabao Cup exit at home to Brighton and a Manchester derby defeat, so a third straight loss was in sight until Cunha’s strike.
What it means for the table
The draw leaves Michael Carrick’s side on five points from five league matches. Sky Sports and TNT Sports both point out that equals United’s lowest total at this stage of any Premier League season, a mark first set in 2014-15.
Fulham are still waiting for a first league win under Álvaro Arbeloa. The point was at least enough to lift them off the bottom of the table.
What comes next
Both clubs now head into the international break. For Carrick, that means a long gap to dwell on a start that has produced one league win. For Martínez, the error will be replayed plenty before United play again, and the question of whether he keeps his place will hang over the break.
