Nene Royal Wins AGT, the Show's First Thai Champion

Nene Royal, a 16-year-old guitarist from Phuket, has won America's Got Talent season 21 and its US$1 million prize, the first Thai act to take the title.

Nene Royal, a 16-year-old guitarist and singer from Phuket, has won season 21 of America’s Got Talent. She is the first Thai act ever to win the show, and she takes the US$1 million prize, according to The Thaiger and Nation Thailand.

The finale aired live on NBC on Wednesday night, 23 September. In Thailand it was already Thursday morning, which is why the Thai press dates the win to the 24th.

How the final played out

The last three acts standing were Nene Royal, the card magician Geno Ploeger and the South Korean magic duo Hundred Fingers, Nation Thailand reports. That left a rock guitarist up against two magic acts, and the vote went to the guitarist.

Her final-round performance was a heavy take on The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army,” played in a red dress with an electric guitar, according to The Thaiger. Judge Howie Mandel told viewers to “give her the million.” Before the result was read, she played “The Emptiness Machine” alongside Linkin Park, a moment both outlets single out. Nation Thailand reports that the band’s co-founder Mike Shinoda called her “amazing” and “incredible”. She also shared the stage with the Mexican rock trio The Warning, according to The Thaiger, and guest judge KSI described her as “out of this world”.

The road to the title

Her run was built on rock covers well older than she is. The Thaiger lists “Zombie” by The Cranberries at her audition, Muse’s “Hysteria” at the judges’ callbacks, and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” in the quarter-finals, which earned her a Golden Buzzer from Mel B.

Terry Crews hosted the season. Her finale costume included handwoven Thai silk, The Thaiger reports.

What the prize actually is

The headline figure is US$1 million, but it is not a single cheque by default. The Thaiger notes that the winner can take it as an annuity paid over 40 years or as a lump sum at present cash value.

What happens next

The win makes her one of the most recognisable young musicians to come out of Thailand. Her plans after the show, including any recording or touring deal, had not been announced when the result was reported.
